Served as Secretary to the Tribunal in a DIAC-administered arbitration proceeding concerning the construction of a residential complex in Dubai, with UAE law as governing law and Dubai, UAE, as place of arbitration

Represented a minority shareholder against the Brazilian Federal Government as the majority Shareholder in a multi-billion Euro arbitration proceeding concerning damages arising from corruption practices inside a Brazilian petroleum company

Represented a main contractor in an arbitration against the electromechanical assembler subcontractor regarding the construction of a chemical recovery boiler in a pulp and paper plant in Brazil

Advised a multinational B2B technology and service provider in a dispute with investors arising out of a debt/equity swap with a view to settling the dispute
Represented a seller in a post-M&A arbitration against the buyer regarding the breach of a non-competition obligation and undue withholding of earn-out amounts in the real estate sector in Brazil

Represented a French buyer in a post-M&A arbitration against the Brazilian sellers regarding breach of representations and warranties in the purchase of a pharmaceutical company in Brazil

Prior to joining BODENHEIMER, João Costa worked for 5 years as an associate with the Disputes Resolution practice group of a large full-service law firm in São Paulo, Brazil.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

João Costa holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) diploma in International Dispute Resolution from Humboldt Universität Berlin, having been granted a “Best Student” award for outstanding academic performance. He also holds a Postgraduate specialization diploma in Civil Procedural Law and a bachelor’s degree in law. He is a graduate from the University of São Paulo (Brazil).
